The Samsung CLP-300 is the entry level printer that makes colour laser printing accessible to the masses. Aimed at the home / small office user is not much more expensive to buy than a mid range inkjet printer and the Samsung toner cartridges cost around twice as much as a set of printer cartridges for a mid range inkjet. The Samsung CLP-300 toner cartridges are slightly different the usual toner cartridges, they’re smaller and therefore print less but this is reflected in their price and is one of the main reasons why the CLP-300 is so affordable. Because it aimed at the home user the CLP-300 isn’t designed to deal with heavy work loads, the paper tray holds a maximum of 150 sheets and its printing speed is lower than the average laser printer with 16ppm in mono and 4ppm in colour, but these speeds are far better than you will get from any inkjet printer. Printing quality is good considering this is a budget printer, the black text is sharp and clear and colour graphics are handled with ease, the also weakness so of he CLP-300 is it photo printing in that its produces rather grainy images, but it’s not a photo printer so this is irrelevant. The build quality of the Samsung CLP-300 is reasonable and the plastics used in its construction feel adequate with the exception of the front panel which feels flimsy and should be handled with care when changing the toners. The printer has definitely been designed with function in mind because it amazingly compact and hats off to Samsung for managing to fit so much into such as small space, the CLP-300 has a footprint that not much bigger than the average inkjet printer, although making it a little bit prettier would have been nice. The Samsung CLP-300 definitely bridges the gap for people who need a colour printer that can print text and graphics quicker than a inkjet but without the high cost of a colour laser printer.
